Snake River Salmon are in the Fight of their Life

Up to 15 million wild salmon once returned to the rivers and streams of the Pacific Northwest. Today, only a couple hundred thousand wild fish return each year to these rivers. The single largest factor driving this tragic decline are a series of federal dams, which kill between 80-95% of young salmon every spring. Over the past 60 years, these rivers have been transformed from a wild, healthy, productive natural system, to a construction site for dozens of dams to provide cheap electricity. While successfully providing cheap electricity to this region, these dams have headed salmon towards
extinction. Scientists have concluded that recovering salmon depends upon restoring a natural river. It is not too late to save this imperiled national treasure...we can restore balance to our river ecosystems by improving habitat and overall river health! It is the goal of the Columbia and Snake Rivers Campaign to restore wild salmon and steelhead and the habitat upon which they depend by partially removing the 4 lower dams. In doing so, the river habitat will greatly increase the survival of salmon. This habitat depends on us to restore its balance of a healthy habitat.
