I have since received the following email, you have got to be fucking kidding me;

Dear Mr. Nichols,

I wish to inform you that there was an additional Oath of Renunciation prescribed by the Secretary of State that you must sign in order to renounce your US citizenship. I did not have this available here in Baghdad on such short notice. The State Department reviewed the papers submitted and without the Oath of Renunciation you did not meet the minimum statutory requirements that would permit the State Department to consider whether your renunciation could be legally effective.

I encourage you to visit a U.S. Embassy outside of Iraq if you would like to pursue this matter. As I informed you, the consular office here is limited to providing emergency services to American citizens. Beth
