"We declare our right on this earth to be a man, to be a human being, to be respected as a human being, to be given the rights of a human being, in this society, on this earth, in this day, which we intend to bring into existence, by any means necessary." - Malcolm X

These joined tattoos began a theme that is wholly representative of my world view. Together the black band and fist for me represent the conscience of humanity and the power to fulfill our human potential. The black band is a reflection of my Irish roots as it is common in Ireland to wear a black arm band at funerals or other times of mourning. My black band symbolizes the deep sorrow I feel resulting from the immense unnecessary suffering so plaguing our world. As a sensitive soul I will undoubtedly remain in a state of mourning while we as humans act as we are. Pain and suffering is one thing; unnecessary human caused pain and suffering is another thing altogether and what we now collectively allow and accept is for me, totally unacceptable.

No matter how unjust our world is however, the fist represents the infinite power we as people have to change it, especially in the West. If we choose to, we can eliminate starvation, provide safe drinking water for all, and abolish weapons of mass destruction and even war itself.

“The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world's problems.” - Gandhi

That is our power, should we reclaim it with a developed conscience we will have the world we should have had long ago.
